Google has recently introduced “Circle to Search”, a new feature aimed at improving the search experience. This feature allows users to search by circling an item of their choice on the phone screen. Similar to Google’s previous applications, Circle to Search offers an interface similar to Google Lens, making the search process more practical.

This feature eliminates the need to open the Google app, allowing users to search directly from any app. For those using three-button navigation, pressing the home button will be enough, while for those using gesture navigation, a long press on the navigation lever will suffice. Circle to Search allows users to circle, highlight or tap on various topics, from text to images.

Meet Circle to Search

Google describes this new feature as “Circle (or highlight or scribble) to search”. It will first be available on Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series and Google’s Pixel 8 and 8 Pro. The feature is then expected to be rolled out to other “premium” Android phones. Circle to Search simplifies the search process by eliminating the need for users to switch between apps. It also works in integration with the multi-search feature, adding a new dimension to visual searches. With Circle to Search, Google allows users to learn more about the topics they circle without asking complex questions. For example, it is possible to circle a popular street food with a visual search and ask “Why is it popular?”. This feature offers a wide range of possibilities for users who want to add more detail to visual searches.

The update is currently rolling out to users in the US, but will be available on all Android and iOS devices in the near future. Google’s Circle to Search stands out by aiming to compete with the AI-driven Microsoft Bing. This new search experience aims to consolidate Google’s leadership in search by allowing users to access information faster and more interactively. Let’s see what difference this new feature will make to the user experience.
