The graphical user interface is everywhere today. It’s on your phone, your laptop, your smart TV. But almost nobody knows the real story of where it started. And almost everyone gets it wrong.
Most people say Apple invented it. Some say Xerox. But the full story goes back further. It’s stranger, more competitive, and far more interesting than any textbook version.
The Graphical User Interface Nobody Remembers
In the late 1960s, a researcher named Douglas Engelbart stood on a stage in San Francisco. He showed the world something it had never seen. He moved a cursor across a screen using a wooden box with two wheels. He clicked on things. He opened windows. He typed notes that appeared instantly on screen.
The year was 1968. The event later became known as “The Mother of All Demos.” However, almost no one in the room fully understood what they were seeing. The audience was confused, then amazed, then completely silent.
Engelbart’s system was called NLS, short for oN-Line System. It ran on a massive computer at Stanford Research Institute. It had no mouse pointer shaped like an arrow. Instead, it used a strange five-key chord keyboard alongside the wooden cursor device.
What Made It Different
Before NLS, computers communicated through text commands only. You typed a line. The computer responded with a line. There were no windows. No icons. No clicking on anything.
Engelbart’s interface let users see information spatially. That was the breakthrough. You could look at the screen and understand relationships between pieces of content. That idea had never existed before in computing.
The Team Behind the Room
Engelbart didn’t work alone. His team at SRI included around seventeen researchers. But Engelbart was the driving force. He believed computers should extend human intelligence. That belief shaped every design choice in NLS.
Funding came from ARPA, the same agency behind early internet research. So in a way, the same money built both the web and the first graphical workspace. That’s a connection most people never make.

The Xerox Chapter Everyone Oversimplifies
By the early 1970s, Xerox had built a research center in Palo Alto, California. They hired brilliant engineers. Then they built the Alto, a personal computer with a screen, a mouse, and overlapping windows. It launched internally in 1973.
The Alto never sold to the public. Xerox didn’t know what to do with it. That’s the part people forget. They built something extraordinary, then mostly ignored it.
The Famous Visit That Changed Everything
In 1979, a group from Apple visited the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center. They saw the Alto in action. Steve Jobs famously got excited. But here’s the detail most stories skip: Xerox got Apple stock in exchange for the visit. It was a deal, not a theft.
Also, Apple’s engineers didn’t just copy what they saw. They redesigned it entirely. The Xerox interface used overlapping windows but didn’t allow them to be dragged freely. Apple’s 1984 Macintosh fixed that. So Apple’s system was genuinely a new thing, built on top of an earlier new thing.
Why Engelbart Still Gets Overlooked
Engelbart’s 1968 demo predated all of it. Yet he’s rarely the first name people mention. One reason is that NLS never became a consumer product. Another is that Engelbart himself was not a marketer. He was a visionary, not a salesman. History tends to reward the salesman.
Still, the computing world eventually caught up with him. In 1997, Engelbart received the ACM Turing Award. That’s the highest honor in computer science. He was eighty-two years old. Better late than never, but definitely late.
Why This Moment Still Matters
Every time you tap a folder on your screen, you’re using Engelbart’s idea. Every drag-and-drop. Every window resize. Every icon on a desktop. None of that existed before 1968.
That’s a wild thought. The entire visual language of computing was invented by one team, in one demo, in one afternoon in San Francisco. And most people have never heard Engelbart’s name.
Today, AI interfaces are starting to move beyond icons and windows entirely. Voice, gesture, and thought-controlled input are all being explored. So we may be near the end of the graphical era that Engelbart started. But we should at least know we’re leaving something remarkable behind.
