NASA and Lockheed Martin have unveiled the experimental X-59 supersonic jet designed to reduce the sound of sonic booms. In this scope, NASA and Lockheed Martin Signed X-59 Supersonic Jet. This innovative jet is the product of a long research and development process aimed at solving noise problems during supersonic flights.

Designed by Lockheed Martin’s development division Skunk Works, the X-59 can reach speeds of 925 miles per hour, reducing the sonic boom to a “gentle rumble”. This greatly reduces the noise associated with supersonic aircraft, representing a significant advance in the aerospace industry.

The aircraft’s 30.3-meter-long fuselage features a long tapered nose specially designed to reduce the effects of sonic booms. This design minimizes the impact of shock waves associated with sonic boom, significantly reducing noise around the X-59.

The cockpit of the X-59 does not have traditional forward-facing windows, but is equipped with high-resolution cameras connected to 4K monitors. This design allows pilots to have a comprehensive view of the outside of the aircraft without the need for windows. This improves the aerodynamic performance of the aircraft and makes the interior more ergonomic.

The X-59 is currently undergoing ground tests and is scheduled to make its first flight later this year. The aircraft will then undergo acoustic testing, the data from which will play an important role in shaping future commercial supersonic aircraft designs.

NASA and Lockheed Martin say the X-59’s improved technology could be an important reference point for future commercial supersonic aircraft. Such aircraft have great potential in commercial aviation, as they are capable of traveling above Mach 1, breaking the sound barrier.

The introduction of the X-59 is an indication of the continuous innovation and developments in the aviation industry. John Clark, Vice President of Lockheed Martin Skunk Works, emphasizes that the X-59’s mission towards silent supersonic technology could have lasting and transformational effects on the aviation industry worldwide.

Finally, it is important to note that the X-59 is the result of supersonic aircraft technology that has been continuously developed since the flight of the Bell X-1 in 1947. Such aircraft are known for being quieter and more efficient compared to commercial aircraft such as Concorde, which could play an important role in future commercial aviation.
