Developed by Disney Research, “Robot Gaze” is a realistic animatronic robot equipped with human-like gaze and interaction capabilities. A comprehensive design that aims to create gaze interactions that are important for both technological innovation and the accuracy and believability of character animation, Gaze’s goal is to create interactions that offer the illusion of life.

The latest addition to Disney’s theme parks, these robots are described as realistic animatronic robots equipped with human-like gaze and interaction capabilities. Developed by Disney Research, these robots aim to offer an immersive and realistic human-robot experience. They exhibit advanced movement and gaze behaviors to provide visitors with a magical experience.

Disney Research and Robot Gaze

Robot Gaze details a system developed to enable realistic gaze in human-robot interactions using a humanoid animatronic bust. Previous work examining gaze between robots and humans has often focused on technical applications. Disney Research’s Robot Gaze aims to create gaze interactions not only from a technological perspective, but also from the perspective of character animation, where movement accuracy and believability are important. It develops a system to create interactions that offer the illusion of life. The system detects people in the environment, identifies relevant people on the basis of noteworthy actions. It selects the appropriate gaze behavior and responds to stimuli with highly accurate movements. The system uses mechanisms that mimic motor and attentional behaviors observed in biological systems, such as attentional habits, saccades and actuators.

Realistic and Interactive Robot Gaze

The Subsumption architecture allows for the layering of simple motor movements, creating complex behaviors that involve lower levels of behavior and can react interactively and realistically to salient stimuli in the environment. Through this system, we deliver an interactive human-robot experience that can exhibit human-like gaze behaviors. This innovation blends the accuracy and believability of character animation with technology to create a memorable and realistic experience for visitors. These animatronic robots used in Disney’s theme parks represent the perfect combination of advanced technology and careful design to create a mesmerizing environment with realistic gaze and interaction capabilities.
