Yes, Meta joins the race to build artificial general intelligence (AGI). Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company is shifting its focus to developing open source artificial general intelligence (AGI). In line with this goal, the company aims to combine its AI research teams FAIR and GenAI to create full general intelligence and make it as open-source as possible.

In a post on Instagram Reels, Zuckerberg said that their long-term vision is to build general intelligence, responsibly open source it and make it available for everyone to benefit from. Stating that AI needs to advance in a wide range of areas, from reasoning to planning, coding to memory, Zuckerberg emphasized that these efforts are important for next-generation services, AI assistants, content creators and businesses.

Meta and Artificial Intelligence

Yann LeCun, Meta’s chief scientist, expressed skepticism that AGI will appear soon, stating the company competes with OpenAI and Anthropic.

Zuckerberg announced Meta is training Llama 3 and investing in computing infrastructure, including 350,000 Nvidia H100s for advanced AI development. Discussing the Metaverse, Zuckerberg mentioned people need new devices for AI benefits, which will integrate with Meta’s social applications. Regarding AGI debates, the article noted Anthropic has warned about open-source models’ potential dangers, emphasizing concerns over their uncontrolled distribution.

Zuckerberg and Metaverse

The shift represents Meta moving from its previous Metaverse focus to AGI development, which Zuckerberg calls “building the future of connectivity.” Compared to other tech companies, Meta combining research teams like FAIR and GenAI makes sense for achieving its AGI goal.

Zuckerberg’s open-source approach aims to increase model and hardware adoption, encouraging broader accessibility across different technological platforms. As companies like Google and OpenAI announce AGI goals, Meta joins the race with strategic changes to remain competitive.  What do you think about the Meta Joins the Race to Build Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) news?
