Volkswagen has taken a decision effective from the second quarter of 2024. It is preparing to integrate ChatGPT into its vehicles for use in the Tiguan, Passat, Golf and ID e-car family.
The integration will begin in Europe. Wwhere OpenAI’s AI-based chatbot will be available on the Tiguan, Passat and Golf models, as well as the automaker’s ID family of electric vehicles. The AI-based chatbot, based on software company Cerence’s Chat Pro and OpenAI’s broad language model, will be available in Europe. For now, Volkswagen models in the US will not support the feature and the first vehicles will be unveiled at CES 2024.
Volkswagen and ChatGPT
Volkswagen aims to establish a more natural communication between vehicle and driver using ChatGPT. To this end, IDA is integrating ChatGPT to power its in-car voice assistant. Vehicle owners will have the ability to control basic functions and get answers to general information questions through the new voice assistant.
Volkswagen promises that users will avoid having to create a new account or download any apps. However the chatbot will be activated using the wake-up words “Hello IDA” or with a button on the steering wheel. OpenAI will not provide access to driving statistics and will immediately delete the Q&A data for the highest level of protection.

Cerence Chat Pro
Volkswagen says it was able to successfully integrate OpenAI’s AI-based chatbot into its vehicles thanks to Cerence. Al so the third-party software company that provided the ChatGPT integration. Cerence Chat Pro software will enhance Volkswagen’s voice assistant and will be capable of answering a wide range of questions. This integration aims to make in-car communication more advanced by protecting user data at the highest level.
