Volvo Autonomous Solutions (V.A.S.) unveiled its first production-ready autonomous truck, the Volvo VNL Autonomous, at ACT Expo in Las Vegas. The truck combines Volvo’s commercial vehicle expertise with Aurora Innovation’s autonomous driving technology. Volvo VNL Autonomous is a truck designed and built to increase load capacity across the United States.
“By introducing a new way of transportation, we are improving capacity and supporting trade growth,” said Nils Jaeger, President of V.A.S. Jaeger stated that this truck is the first example of Volvo’s autonomous technology platform and that they will offer more models in the future.
Volvo VNL Autonomous is designed with safety in mind and features redundant steering, braking, communication and power management systems. These redundancy systems are integrated to mitigate potential emergencies and increase safety. “Our redundancy systems have been deliberately duplicated to increase safety and reliability,” said Shahrukh Kazmi, Chief Product Officer.
Autonomous Truck from the Safest Brand Volvo
Volvo and Aurora’s engineering teams have collaborated to integrate Aurora Driver, an SAE L4 autonomous driving system, into Volvo VNL Autonomous. Aurora Driver is equipped with powerful AI software, dual computers and advanced sensors such as lidar, high-resolution cameras and radar. Aurora Driver has been tested with 1.5 million commercial miles of driving experience on public roads. Volvo VNL Autonomous will be built at Volvo’s New River Valley factory. This factory is known for its high-volume production experience and stringent quality processes. “This truck offers a fully integrated autonomous solution in the Hub-to-Hub segment,” said Sasko Cuklev, Head of Highway Solutions at Volvo Autonomous Solutions. Volvo Autonomous Solutions aims to address the driver shortage and provide additional capacity to the transportation sector. Autonomous trucks will help drivers achieve a better work-life balance and increase efficiency in the industry. Volvo VNL Autonomous has the potential to revolutionize freight transportation in the United States by combining Aurora’s autonomous driving technology with Volvo’s commercial vehicle expertise. One of the first trucks designed and built for autonomous driving from the ground up, Volvo VNL Autonomous offers greater efficiency and safety than conventional trucks. The truck is equipped with redundant steering, braking and power management systems, making it highly reliable. Volvo VNL Autonomous uses Aurora’s Aurora Driver autonomous driving system. This system is equipped with advanced sensors, cameras and software that allow the truck to sense its surroundings and navigate safely. The truck will be built at Volvo’s factory in Dublin, Virginia, making it ready for mass production and an ideal solution for commercial applications. Volvo VNL Autonomous has the potential to impact not only the transportation industry but also society. These trucks could help close the driver shortage and create a safer transportation system.
