OpenAI recently announced SearchGPT, a new search engine that combines artificial intelligence technology with real-time information from the web. Preparing to take on Google, SearchGPT allows users to ask questions in natural language and manage their search process interactively, as if they were talking to ChatGPT. With SearchGPT, OpenAI aims to provide fast answers from clear and relevant sources, enabling users to access information with less effort.

SearchGPT’s user interface is quite similar to ChatGPT. When you perform a search, it presents information and photos from the web, with links to relevant resources. Users can ask follow-up questions on the topic or explore related searches in a sidebar. Some searches also take the user’s location into account, which aims to improve the accuracy of the results. The company plans to integrate this new tool into ChatGPT in the future, so that users can both chat and search on a single platform. However, the first results show that SearchGPT did not pass the first tests.

SearchGPT’s First Tests and Challenges

SearchGPT’s early trials have revealed some problems. In a promotional video, it misreported the dates of the Appalachian Summer Festival in the US, demonstrating that AI systems can struggle to understand context and sometimes experience “hallucinations”. This error occurred because it mistakenly reported when the festival box office was closed, not the actual dates of the festival.

OpenAI acknowledged this bug and said they will continue to improve it. The company is currently alpha testing with a small group of users and publishers. This shows that AI-powered searches still need further development.

Can OpenAI SearchGPT Become a Competitor to Google?

The emergence of SearchGPT poses a potential threat to search giants like Google. Investors are concerned that OpenAI’s move could affect Google’s market share. But Google is not sitting idle; it is developing its own AI-powered search features and has launched an AI assistant called Gemini (formerly Bard).

SearchGPT offers an exciting glimpse into the future of AI-assisted search, but caution must be exercised when it comes to accuracy and reliability. What remains to be seen is how this new technology will change the way we access information and how it will impact the search engine market.

AI-powered search engines like SearchGPT have the potential to transform the way we search for and access information. But these technologies need further development and testing to mature and become reliable. Users and experts will continue to closely follow the development of these next-generation search tools.
