UNStudio has announced plans to build the world’s tallest spikeless Ferris wheel in an exciting project in Seoul, South Korea. The unique structure will be shaped like two intersecting rings with compartments that will rotate around it, offering spectacular views of the area. The Ferris wheel, called the Seoul Twin Eye, is being designed by UNStudio and will be realized in collaboration with Arup and Heerim Architects. The project will be located above a 40-meter-high cultural complex and will have a diameter of 180 meters. The maximum height of the structure will be 220 meters.
The Seoul Twin Eye
The Seoul Twin Eye will house a total of 64 capsules, each of which can hold 25 visitors at a time. Unlike traditional Ferris wheels, these capsules will move using a track-based system that pulls in and out of the rings. Thus, visitors will experience an impressive view of the landscape while enjoying the Ferris wheel.
The UNStudio team shaped the design by focusing on the symbolic value of the project. The design of the wheel reflects the movement of the Honcheonsigye astronomical clock, one of the historical symbols of South Korea. This double-ring structure is designed to provide both stability and a unique aesthetic. UNStudio worked closely with Arup, which studies the resilience of structures to natural phenomena such as earthquakes and wind.
UNStudio Twin Eye Project
The local metro station connection planned as part of the project will provide visitors with easy access to the structure. In addition, a zip line will be constructed, offering visitors a fun transportation experience.
The Seoul Twin Eye project appears to be part of the Seoul Ring project announced by the Seoul Metropolitan Government. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2025 and be completed in 2028. With the completion of this project, Seoul will become a tourist attraction of worldwide attention.
The World’s Tallest Ferris Wheel Will Be a Pearl in the Sky
With this unique project in Seoul, UNStudio will bring a new landmark to the city’s skyline. The Seoul Twin Eye will stand out not only for its height, but also for its double-ring design. This project will combine modern engineering and architectural marvels while offering visitors a spectacular view. The Seoul Twin Eye will boost the city’s tourism potential and contribute economically and culturally to the region. In addition, such projects are important for sustainable development and environmental awareness. In this context, UNStudio’s implementation of the project with environmental impact assessments and sustainability strategies will contribute to the goal of leaving a more livable world for future generations.
